I’ll be honest, I love blogging, but I love making money too! 🙂 And I also love testing new things out. After making 23$ last month from this blog alone, I decided to test a new template and other theories I’ve read about. Actually, my previous template had a big problem too… it was responsive but… It often looked crappy depending on which smart phone you would look at it and depending on which side you would flip your phone too.
So, I decided to try something else. Hopefully I’ll make more money this month! I love it when it goes up!
Problems with my previous template
Most of the problems with my previous template were caused by some tweaking that I made to the template while trying to fit a big logo and a 970×250 ad banner. I fixed most of the problems I had with the template on another of my sites. But, for this blog, I decided to try a new experiment to see where it would lead me.
This template looks better (based on my testings) on smart phones.
Ads in the hot spot
Now, most of my march income came from 970×250 ads. But like I said, these ads don’t look great on smart phones. Responsive ads look much better but the CTR seems to be lower on them. Also, half of my traffic comes from portable devices, so I had to make sure my blog would look better on their smart phones and tablets. All things considered, I’ve decided to try them out anyways and I’ve replaced all my top ads here with responsive ads (except for the “page.php” page template. For the pages, I kept the 970×250 ads. I put them right in the hot spot, above the fold but under the menu. Based on what I’ve learned from “professional bloggers”, it seems to be the best place to put an ad.
My template still has a right sidebar though. It seems that a skyscraper in the left sidebar would yield better results, but I don’t like left sidebars. Even though I want to monetize my blogs, I also want to provide a good experience to readers and I believe that when the content is on the left, it is easier to read. At least, I prefer it that way.
I’ve also blended the ad color with the template. It seems that it gave good results on other blogs. I’m not sure about that one because nowadays people know if it’s an ad or not. We’re not in 2001 anymore, but I’ll give it a try anyway. The only thing I have to lose is 20$ of potential income and I can go back to my old template and settings anytime.
Can’t wait to see the results! 🙂
