Wow! That test was short! I recently changed my template and ads size to verify if ads size and templates could really have an impact or not on the potential income I could make from ads. I was expecting to let that test run for a month, but it’s not necessary to pursue. I was already impressed by the difference and had enough traffic to make this test significant! It really does have a huge impact and for me, it was a negative one this time!
I made too many changes at the same time to really tell if the problem was responsive ads, ads placement or color blending of ads/template but even though I can’t tell you what my stats were, I can sure tell you that my CTR dropped by more than 66% as soon as I changed the template and ads size. Also, my CPC was a lot lower.
One note though, I’ve put responsive ads on this blog and other websites I have to test them and I was not impressed at all. CTR and CPC was damn low with these ads compared to 970×255 ad blocks. I might test them for a longer time or at another time in the future but here, I’ll go back to 970×255 ad blocks.
All things considered, I’m better off with my previous template so I’m switching back to it right away but with a slight change again to test something different.
This time, I will test a 970×255 ad below the navigation bar instead of placing it in the header as I previously did. I’ll see what are the results. It looks better below the navigation bar than under the logo in the header but I really had interesting results with that setup so I guess that time will tell.
I’ll keep you guys posted!
