Another month has passed and things are getting better and better. That’s what I like about having started this journey. I know that somehow, things are always improving (compounding) behind the scene and that I’m getting closer to my goal of being financially independent at a young age.
February has not been a big month in terms of stock purchase and savings though. Actually I feel bad because I just put 100$ aside in savings and did not buy any stocks at all. But, my debts are going down at least! My mortgage balance now stands at 151,000$. It was at 165,000$ in august so it’s great. My personal debts are going down too. I don’t know the exact number but it should lie around 9,000$.
Paying off my debts is already getting wealthier and it’s also gaining more freedom. If I would want it, I could sell my house, clear all my remaining debts (mortgage + 9k loan) and even pocket a juicy profit. But that’s not in my plans for now.
I expect a couple of dividend raises in march. That’s actually pretty exciting! I hope to get good raises this year again. We should also hear about ARCP in march… I hope that they will reestablish the dividend. I still own 100 shares (that I should have sold) and would be pretty pleased to see it go back to better valuation.
I should also receive my bonus and tax refund in april / may which will resplenish my trading account with at least 10,000$ of fresh money to invest. So while february was a boring month for me, I expect march, april and may to be far more interesting.
In february I have received 6,74$ plus 14,22$ for a total of 20,96$ in dividend income in my TFSA from Liquor Store and Cominar REIT. I have also received 9,16$ (DE) plus 20,00$ (PJC-a.to) plus 11,12$ (O) for a total of 40,28$ in my RRSP account.
So, all of this to say that I have received a total of 61,24$ in dividend income this month without moving a single finger. Not bad huh! Okay I know it’s still not that much but last year at the same date, my dividend income was 17$. So it’s a nice year to year raise.
January was not a great month for my online income. February has been much better.
I have followed a tip that Thomas from INeedMoneyAsap.com gave me and replaced my 748×90 banner for a super huge banner of 970×250 on most of my websites because I was intrigued by the potential results. Thomas is making more than 1500$ per month right now so getting a tip from him was like getting an unattended gift.
It’s a huge banner but it’s not in the text so once you skip the header you don’t see it anymore as a user. Let me tell you that I’m pretty pleased with the results and that this banner is here to stay for now. Actually, 44% of my advertizing income comes from clicks on that banner, thanks to you Thomas. Keep up the great work!
My traffic was much lower this month but with the help of his tip, my online advertising income have increased and february has been as good as december.
But, it’s not only due to that small modification. One of my niche websites has also awakened from the dead and has received a very high click-through-rate compared to my other websites. Unfortunately it’s not getting a lot of traffic for now and it’s about carpenter ants so it won’t get equal traffic every month but it’s a good sign to see traffic increase in february on that subject. I’m pretty optimist that it will eventually pay off. Setting that website costed me about 50$ in books and for buying a dot com and hosting so it’s going to take a while before it pays off but I’m pretty optimistic that it should at least make 50$ this year… We’ll see. This website is an experiment that I made last november to test SEO keyword oriented strategies with little to no backlinks… I didn’t think it would work but hey… it made me a couple bucks this month.
Advertizing made me 29,93$ total this month with an average CTR of 0,79% and an average CPC of 0,55$.
It’s funny because QuitYourDayJob is my biggest blog, the one that I update the most often but it’s not the most optimal in terms of online income. The CTR here is very low at 0,48% but the CPC is very high at 1,13$ per click. So it ends up bringing almost 50% of my advertising income while it does not get a great CTR.
On the contrary, my carpenter ants website, who only has a handful of posts, a very recent website that I’m not updating at all and which is built with the same template, is getting a CTR of 2,70%, the same number of clicks but a CPC of 0,35$ only. So it only made me 4,15$ in february but with very minimal traffic.
I guess that this means that if my CTR is low here, it’s not because of the template or of the ads position since I’m using the exact same pattern… There must be something else… Maybe it’s the language… My english is basic while french is my native language. Or maybe it’s loading time… It often takes a while here for the ads to show… I’ll have to make some tests I guess.
I’m new to exploring the niche site technique which consist in targeting specific keywords with enough volume but very low competition. It’s a lot of fun but for now, I haven’t reach the success I’d like to have.
I’ll have to think about it but maybe I should focus on writing in french if I eventually want to make a living out of blogging. I really can get a better CTR in french. The proof is my french version of QuitYourDayJob who gets a CTR of 1,95% and twice the number of clicks I get here with the exact same template, topic and ad placement… but with a CPC of only 0,41$ so the french version of this website only brought me 8,94$.
You see… that’s a problem. French is already a niche in itself. Advertising competition is pretty low and CPC are relatively low too so the potential of making a lot of money with Adsense on my french blogs is limited. But, I certainly could build niche sites around products and make money as an affiliate instead. But the canadian french market is marginal… Maybe I should focus on France… it’s a bigger market but also a pretty different culture and way of speaking. So I might have the same difficulties.
I guess it’s food for thoughts
Okay, back to my main subject… I also have received a huge amount of traffic on my ‘best sidelines page’ here at QuitYourDayJob. This page is an affiliate page monetized with Clickbank. I had two sales over the month of february which made me 37,55$. But I also learned something I didn’t understand at first with being a Clickbank affiliate. After 6 months with no sales, if you have a balance in your clickbank account, they start charging you 1$ per pay period, slowly depleting your commission’s account. After a couple of pay periods, they charge you 5$ per pay period… That suck! I lost 3$ over that ‘penalty’. But hey… it’s better than nothing anyway.
So my total online income for february 2015 is 64,48$. Grand total : 125,72$ in dividend and online income or 4,49$ per day. It’s growing my friends… it’s growing slowly but surely! I’m still far from my 65$ per day in dividend income or 82$ per day in passive income but I’m confident that all of this will compound.
How about you? Did you have any good news in february regarding you passive income cash flow?
