As part of my plan to reach early retirement, I’d like to see my online income grow as long as my dividend income. Being a pretty recent blogger with absolutely no training in SEO, when I first started this blog, I just hooked myself to my keyboard and started writing about my journey from being broke to fully retired.
At first, Google sent me zero traffic for a long time until I wrote a post about sideline jobs (side hustles). Then, suddenly, I saw the first signs of interest from Google and some traffic came in slowly. I didn’t really took notice and just continued to write and write and write about everything I came across or that crossed my mind and was related to my niche.
But Google didn’t care about it and continued sending me very low and inconsistent traffic.
But my daily traffic continued to grow anyhow because of my commenting efforts and implication in my niche but most visitors were and are fellow bloggers or visitors from their blogs.
I thought it had to be that way and that somehow Google would put me on the first page one day until I realized that people were making a lot of money with pretty recent websites using simple and sound strategies.
That’s when I decided to make a huge shift in my strategy.
My life is boring
I have dedicated 2014 to learning about dividend growth investing and sharing my journey here. I will now dedicate 2015 to learning about SEO.
Google recently launched the Panda update and many SEO gurus have found their websites highly penalized. That’s when Google has said something very important :
Write for people! Not for Google!
I have decided to listen to them as I was not doing any of the two. Neither was I writing for Google (aggressive SEO) or was I writing for people. Instead, I was writing for me… It was a personal finance journal… And since nobody knows me, well nobody cared! 🙂
I probably sounded like one of your aunt talking to you about the sister of the friend of her colleague who has had her car stolen two years ago… Do we listen to what our aunt says when she starts chatting about people we never met? Nope!
Stupid me! That’s the first and biggest mistake a blogger can make. People don’t care about you. They don’t know you and unless you have an incredible story to tell, no one ever will.
I didn’t climb the Everest backward, I won’t run naked around Manhattan just to get your attention, I won’t eat a live goldfish and film myself to post it on YouTube… I’m just a plain and ordinary guy, living a plain and ordinary life and seeking early retirement. So, until I do something major and reach retirement at or before 45, my story will probably interest no one! Not even my girlfriend reads my posts… imagine!
Now I know! It took me long…
From now on, I’ll write for people… but make sure Google shows!
This brings a lot of questions :
What do people want to read about?
What kind of keywords do they search for in Google
How do I rank for these keywords?
What is SEO?
What is a backlink, link building and link bait?
How do I do on-page optimization?
Should I monetize my blog with ads or with affiliate products? With both?
Should I start over with a new dot com?
To make a test, I have launched a new micro-niche website and bought a new .com purposely with a mistake in the name for keyword ranking tests. I have to say that I made some major mistakes with my keyword research and competition research and also with the choice of my niche so it did not yield a lot of results so far, but I had fun and I learned a lot.
Transforming QuitYourDayJob101 into a niche authority site
Over the next few weeks and months, I will learn about these questions and slowly transform QuitYourDayJob101 into what it was supposed to be at first : a niche authority site about all the possible ways to make money and to retire early, to save money, to quit a day job, to start a business, to start a side hustle and turn it into a profitable business, to work from home and so on. That was the reason why I bought that .com in the first place and I never used it to its full potential as of now.
I will continue to talk about dividend growth investing and to publish my progresses here though. My goal is and will remain to quit my day job at or before 45 years with a mix of dividend growth investing and other sources of passive income.
My new goal for 2015 is to make that blog profitable! I wouldn’t say no to 1500$ per month on average and I now know it is something possible. I’ll have to face a lot of headwinds. I will make mistakes. I might reach my goal… or not! But I’ll try to have fun all throughout and I will keep you posted about my improvements.
QuitYourDayjob101 is brandable and in a niche with a lot of potential for making money and helping the millions of people out there who are in needs of ideas to save money or make money. I will try to make it a resource for people… and for Google!
