It seems that everybody is talking about niche, niche sites, micro-niche and niche authority sites nowadays. But what does niche mean?
This word can have many meanings but in the “how to make money online” world, it’s simply a term to talk about a distinct segment of a market.
My blog’s niches
Let’s take my blog as an example. It’s a personal finance blog. This is the broader niche I blog in. There are millions of personal finance blogs out there, it’s a very vast niche! I had to focus on something more precise. The main purpose of my blog is to talk about quitting my day job, early retirement and passive income. Again, these are three large niches but they are enclosed in the larger personal finance niche. But you see, it’s getting more precise. This blog is not about personal finance in general, it’s about quitting my job ASAP and reaching early retirement through passive income.
It’s like russian dolls
So, for sure, here I will also explore other ways of making money online or making money offline because if I can quit my day job to be my own boss and make a decent and sufficient income, then I will! So I also target these niches inside the personal finance niche.
While I will explore and discuss about those niches, in order to reach early retirement through passive income, I have decided to use the dividend growth investing strategy and also to make money online blogging. These are very smaller segments of the market or smaller niches.
If I would have wanted to focus on a large niche, I would have started a personal finance blog. For a micro-niche site, I could have chosen to focus only on passive income or dividend growth investing. But I prefer niche authority sites. They are “brandable”, they can grow for years, we can write thousands of articles on the subject and yet, they are smaller niches then the personal finance niche itself.
What you should focus on
Since there is a lot of competition out there, if you want your blog to rank in Google and if you want to make money online, you’ll have to pick a niche, probably build an authority site niche or a micro-niche site and focus on long tail keywords with a lot of queries but with very low competition. That’s what we call niche marketing. Do you remember the basic law of economy : “high demand + low offer = higher price”? And obvioulsy it mean more profit for you!
Understanding what does niche mean can put you on the road to success! It took me a while to understand these concepts and to finally decide to apply them. I spent the last year focusing on learning how to blog, I learned a lot about WordPress and about making connections with other bloggers. I also spent a lot of time investing, learning about investing and writing in my “dividend growth investing” niche. Now it’s about time for me to monetize my blog and make my online income soar!
