If someone would have told me that by the end of the year 2014 I would have done so much, I wouldn’t have believed him. 2014 has been a great year during which I learned a lot, made new connections with a couple of like-minded bloggers out there, a year during which I really started to earn passive income.
Honestly, while that income is passive in the sense that it will repeat by itself with no extra work on my part, I can say that I have worked a lot!!! I have spent countless hours (probably more than the hours I spent at my day job) at reading, learning, blogging, testing, tweaking blog themes, connecting with other bloggers, commenting on their posts, trying to rank better in Google… It’s been a lot of work, but also a lot of fun!
I feel confident that 2015 will yield just better results.
I learned a lot about dividend growth investing
Over the course of 2014, I’ve learned a lot about dividend growth investing and investing in general. I’ve built myself a 35,000$ portfolio yielding me a little north to 1100$ per year in passive income. It’s not a lot, but it’s the first time I ever have that much money in my account and that’s the first time in my life that I really receive passive income. So I feel like a kid about it!!
I’ve made a lot of mistakes along the way, but that’s how we learn. And for sure, I’m far from being perfect and I still have a lot to learn!
I have built several websites
During the same timeframe, I’ve also built several websites or blogs and tried to learn about how to make money online blogging, about how to rank in Google. This has been the main subject about which I read over the last two months. I realized that ranking in Google and getting a lot of traffic was tough, but possible. I still haven’t achieved it but I’ve connected with some bloggers out there who are making a lot with their blogs. They gave me some tips and tricks, but nowadays, I think that it’s mostly all about how you interact with people and how people love you… or not! If the crowd likes you and share, you’ll rank! If they don’t, you’ll end up in the garbage…
A new goal in 2015
Still, there is some basic SEO that I can optimize and I’ve decided to focus on what I can control : optimizing my website better and writing more content that people want to read about. Since my website was not created for SEO optimization at first, I guess it will never be fully optimized. But, I can do a lot to rank better and I’ll focus a lot on that in 2015.
Google is not sending me my share of traffic yet and I’d like to get my part of the cake too!
Now let’s see what my december passive income looked like.
December was the greatest month of my life in terms of dividend income. I have received a total of 160,86$ CAN.
|Johnson & Johnson||4,82$|
That’s money I could spend, that’s money I could pay my bills with, that’s money I could reinvest!
I will reinvest it because I want to see that snowball rolling!
December was an incredible month for me with Adsense too. I had both my biggest day ever and my biggest month ever with Adsense. It’s still not great, but it’s steadily growing and that’s the most important thing.
On december 8th and 9th, I’ve completely changed the design of my blog. In that single day, I’ve made 9,45$ with adsense! It’s almost as much as what I’ve made for the entire month of november!
Unfortunately, the small buzz only lasted one day!
Between december 1st and december 28th, I’ve made 28.35$ with Adsense. Amazon yielded not results again, I’ve received nothing from Badoo (I’m now an affiliate for one of my websites), nothing with MyThemeShop even though they offer great themes like True Pixel which I may buy pretty soon. It seems that Viral Nova has made up to 400,000$ in a single month using that theme.
With Clickbank, I made 0$ once again too…
Total passive and not so passive income
If we add my dividend income and my Adsense income, we get 189,21$. If I take off my august 2014 capital gain from Tim Hortons sales, december has overall been my best month so far and my best month from my dividend income point of view while august was my best month in terms of online income so far.
Traffic & ranking
At first, when you start blogging, you rarely focus on traffic. You just want to share whatever comes to your mind with the rest of the universe. Unfortunately, human nature is such that people who don’t know you usually don’t care about who you are, what you do and what you think. Steve Adcock from thinksaveretire.com has recently said something that I will remember :
Opinions are like assholes… everybody has one!
It may be a common saying, but as a french native speaker, it was the first time I heard that one and it made me laugh.
Anyways… That’s it… Having opinions on something did not make me popular. Making peanuts with dividend growth investing didn’t make me popular either and there is no way that I will film myself running naked around the Statute of Liberty just to get a buzz around my website.
So, my traffic was low… very low… and it took months until I finally got some traffic.
I don’t know if it has something to do with it, but in september 2014, I have reached a milestone. Finally, I would be making more than a 1000$ in forward annual dividend income. Maybe people started to take me more seriously or maybe it is also because it’s in september that I finally decided that I was tired to write for myself only…
September was also the month during which I had decided to start learning some basic SEO.
Let’s see what happened to my traffic since then :
I also started to track my ranking with Alexa. I didn’t pay for a subscription, so it’s all approximations, but it gives me a broad idea of what kind of ranking I achieve and how it has evolved.
I made a lot of progress there too and I recently decided to track my Moz ranking too.
When I first started to track my ranking on october 14th 2014, my blog was ranked 3,796,958. As of today, my ranking looks like this :
While my blog is still far from being a great popular blog or even a popular blog, I’m pretty happy with the results. And that’s how my Adsense earnings went from 3$ per month to 30$ per month!
It’s still not great, but I like the improvements I see at least. And hey!!! It now pays for my internet connection! So that’s another milestone reached!
I’ve been making a lot of changes recently on my blog and I hope to see results over the next following months. If I could make a 1000$ per year with my blog, that would already be great. But if I could make a 1000$ per month, that would be even better!!! 🙂
This is not passive income though. It’s a job. But, I love it so much that I consider it more like a hobby. If I could make a decent paycheck from blogging, I would definitely think about quitting my day job once my mortgage will be paid. We’ll see what life reserves me!
Best wishes for 2015 and happy new year everyone!
