With Halloween 2014 already over it’s time for me to post an update here.
October has been an interesting month with the DOW dipping to the low 16000 and gaining back all that was lost within two weeks. There was also this news about ARCP, one of my holdings down more than 20%, which is now under scrutiny on accounting issues.
Warren Buffett emphasized that before investing, one should make sure that the managers of the company in which you wish to invest are honest and candid with shareholders. While verifying such a thing is pretty hard, I can tell you that I learned the hard way what damage dishonesty can make.
My capital for investing was pretty limited during october and I haven’t been able to profit as much as I would have loved to of the recent dip. Anyhow, I was able to add 9 Exxon shares to my portfolio and got them at a very good price!
Let’s see how are things as of october 31st 2014 :
Online ranking and income
I want to reach early retirement and quit my 9 to 5 job as soon as possible and to reach that goal, I must replace my job income by other sources of income. As such, I have chosen to invest in dividend growth stocks and also to develop other sources of income that would be derived from intellectual properties.
While I’ve been good at saving, investing and generating dividend income, building other sources of passive income is a lot harder and honestly I didn’t put a lot of focus on it yet.
To change that, I recently decided that I should track my progresses and do intelligent things that would increase my blog traffic.
Yesterday, I reached a milestone I had set for myself : being added on the blogroll of a famous blogger! I can now say : been there done that!!! 🙂 Thanks Jason for adding my blog to your blogroll on www.dividendmantra.com. It’s really appreciated and I’ll continue to work hard here to make sure I stay listed there!
During october, I have also decided to track my Alexa ranking. I’ve actually made huge progresses during the single month of october. I didn’t took note of what was my ranking in september, but I remember that I was ranked something like 5,000,000 or more. On october 14th, my Alexa ranking was 3,796,958 while my current Alexa ranking is 2,737,812! I’m down one million in two weeks! Not bad! I’d like to reach a ranking below 1,000,000 before Christmas. That would be great!
On the income side, October as ranked as my third best month so far with 36,87$ coming from both Google Adsense and Clickbank. Amazon yielded no results so far. One interesting fact was that my Adsense income has been 22,26$ during this single month, more than a quarter of what I had made so far with Adsense, “so far” being between june 2013 and october 2014!! To be exact, between june 2013 and october 2014, I had made 86,35$ from Google Adsense. And from october 1st to october 31st, 22,26$!!! I don’t know if it means something or not, but I’m happy with that increase.
Beside adding a couple of posts here, I have asked to be added to the ModestMoney finance blog list and to the Rockstar Finance blog list. This sure helped to boost my ranking. Thank you guys! As of october 31st 2014, I rank 401 out of 408 blogs on ModestMoney list… ouch… Not good!!
I should definitely write guest posts, but I feel that my english isn’t good enough yet. Someday I feel confident and other days (like today), writing in english is just so hard that I feel like an illiterate. I’ll see… One day I’ll overcome my fear and do it. Until then, I’m happy with my recent improvements.
Dividend growth investing results
During the month of october, I have received 52,66$ (CAN) in dividend income : 18,43$ from ARCP (grrr… I’m so mad about what they did, my position is down 800$ so far), 8,09$ from Realty Income (O), 12,84$ and 0,26$ from Philip Morris (PM), 6,74$ from Cominar (CUF-un.to) and 6,30$ from Liquor Store (LIQ.to).
On the dividend growth side, Aflac (AFL) has announced a 5,4% dividend raise which boosted my daily dividend income by 1 cent!!! 🙂 Dividend raises are always welcome! I love getting those raises. It just proves that this thing actually works. My only concerns is that they are lower than I was expecting. My goal is to get an 8% dividend raise per year on my portfolio income overall, but I think I will not achieve this and might have to either select some stocks with better dividend growth prospects (and lower yields) or review my projections a little. It’s too soon to panic, but McDonald’s has raised its dividend by only 5%, Philip Morris by 6,4% and now Aflac have delivered lower than expected dividend raise. Plus, with the ARCP mess, I expect a dividend cut.
I had a great horse with Tim Hortons and was expecting great dividend growth there but Warren Buffett made a deal to incorporate it to Burger King… So my dividend growth potential is gone there but with a juicy profit at least.
Mortgage outstanding balance
I want to clear my personal debts by 2018 and my mortgage by 2020. That’s a huge goal that I’ve fixed myself, but a very important one. Being debt free, is already being financially free! It will boost by a lot my possibilities in life since I see a mortgage as sort of a cage or a prison which forces me to work every day since I have to pay that huge amount of money every two weeks.
As of september 2013, my mortgage balance was 173250$. I’m very proud to announce that one year later, I now have an outstanding mortgage balance of 159,546$!!! Wow! In order to achieve such results, I reduced my amortization by a lot, pay on a bi-weekly schedule and double-up my payments. If everything goes as planned, I will be mortgage free by 2020!
All right! That’s it for tonight!
Have a great week-end guys!
